This is our Christmas tree from last year. My wife, Jacqueline, made it Swiss Family Robinson-style from little pieces of ocean driftwood tied together with blades of grass. The gifts are packs of gum, little packages of cookies, and other things wed bought for each other on the sly at street markets and the little, family-owned pulperias. How would we make it special for the kids? But first we had to get there.

I blogged for years here at blindbartimaeus. My boyfriend got a job as a photojournalist at the local newspaper. I took a job shortly thereafter at the same paper as a government reporter. We are planning a wedding and a life together. I always thought that was such a simp.

For me, few things are as inspiring as seeing United States Marines in their dress blues. I have a deep appreciation for all who have served in the Armed Forces, but I will admit, I have a particular bias is for the Marines.
